Fitness Focus: Eat More to Lose Weight- Awesome!!

Sounds too good to be true right? Check out this really interesting post from the guys at Training Peaks to find out how to make it work for you.

Sounds quite contradictory, right? The experts have told us for years that we as a society eat too much and in order to lose weight and/or perform better we have to cut out some of those oh-so-precious calories! We then have to wonder, how do I perform as an athlete and lose weight at the same time if I’m cutting out calories? Can I do both?
Let’s put a quick disclaimer in place first: this article is directed towards athletes, who are training regularly and are interested in losing weight for performance. Individuals who are not on an intensive training schedule and are simply after weight loss goals will have a different set of rules apply. So, if we take a step back and consider that our athlete body is in constant motion, we recognize that it’s in constant need of fuel. We can either feed it calorie dense fuels or nutrient dense fuels. Which is better?

Amazing new collection from the guys at ILE

How awesome do these look! A great new collection has just been launched from our friends at ILE- hand-made quality bags from California. If you like them as much as we do, then get in touch! alex@vamperformance.com

They picked up a roll of cyan colored Cordura and loved the color so much we decided to build our entire line. We have 9 items stocked, with rackbags due to be finished first week of June. They all have grey liners which is also a new offering, and is a great balance between not showing dirt and allowing light into the bag so you can see your gear.

Ups and Downs of Circles

VAM insight- Alex's thoughts

So things have been going very well for me of late- VAM Performance has been kicking off nicely, we have a great range of gear online, our new website has just launched and online sales are going well- oh and the expansion is set to continue!!

Also in my private life I have been enjoying some good cycling form. 11th place in the Brenig Road Race- a big regional event, was a pleasing result. Couple that with 3rd place the week before and then 5th place in an evening Crit race made for a happy chap.

However in cycling as in life things can turn quickly, a crash in a mid-week crit race where I felt very strong, coupled with a bout of man-flu- which will most likely mean a weekend of planned racing being missed, makes for an un-happy chap.

So I am sat blogging feeling a little sorry for myself. 'Pull yourself together' is on order I think! As if the last week proved anything that while things can turn from good to bad quickly, they can also do the very opposite- so time to get on the Paracetemol, get better and get back out fighting!!

Have a good weekend riding, running and racing,
Alex, VAM

Fitness Focus

A short but good video about the importance of hydration.

As the weather (hopefully) warms up and your riding becomes more frequent and longer the importance of hydration on your rides and activities becomes even more important.
Be sure to check out more info and videos from the guys at GSSI- really interesting stuff.

Food for thought

A staple of many cyclist and endurance athlete's diet- rice can be a great way to replenish carb stores and fuel your training. But this article shows maybe its a good time to think about where your rice is coming from...

Just Landed- Horizon Watches!!

We are very pleased to bring another seriously cool product to the LeadOut store in the form of Horizon watches.

HORIZON Watches was founded in April 2012, by 5 brothers with a shared vision, to create a brand greater than the sum of its parts.
That brand is bold, new and original.  That brand is HORIZON.
Mixing our combined interests of Skate, BMX, Mountain Biking , Motocross and Snowboard we created a brand infused with a sense of all these things.  Perfectly styled to suit the requirements of these passions and tough enough to withstand all the elements - water, earth and air...  (Ok, so we’re working on fire proof.)
The brand might be new to the scene, but we’re not.  We're already making quick headway from sponsoring our own Athletes, across many different disciplines (BMX, MTB, Motor racing, Snowboard, and more!) to being official sponsors of different sporting events.

Introducing you to a new world!!

Strava!!

I am sure many of you are aware of Strava and its addictiveness but for those of you who are yet to get involved in the social media revolution..
Ok so there are a lot of very keen and competitive runners and cyclists out there- wouldn't it be great if you could see how you stack up against your friends and even pros on the local 10mile commute route or your 50mile Sunday ride course?

Well Strava has been around for a little while now and I am hooked! You need a GPS device or the Strava app on you iPhone and our QuadLock mount and then you can upload workouts to the site and see how you compare- it will rank you over popular segments over the course you rode or run such as a challenging hill or long straight drag. You can then head out on your next ride and try and PB. There are a lot of cool challenges on there to get involved with, and you can also track how much training some of the pros do also- mind blowing
Warning though it is addictive! www.strava.com

Get into the revolution with our bike mount

ILE hand-made bags in the U.K!

Our friends at another young company VAM Performance have recently agreed to distribute a range of backpacks in the U.K. The bags are hand-made in sunny California and seem to be top quality. In the range is a bag made specifically for cyclists and ideal for commuters and racers alike to transport their gear around in style! There is also a version for keen photographers, designed to carry the expensive cameras and lenses in all weathers and in serious comfort. Moreover there are 2 bags for everyday use with some cool functions like laptop sleeves and water-proof compartments.

One of the custom versions... we like!

We saw the first bags the other day and were very impressed with the quality and style. We are seriously looking at selling these bags ourselves so please let us know what you think! Until then for more info on the bags and also the possibility to order fully custom versions with whatever colour scheme and branding you wish contact Alex from VAM: alex@vamperformance.com

Double machiato please!!

Coffe Lover?

At Lead-Out we love our coffee! Usually my intake is around 3-4 cups a day- but is it good for you or not? Well I have found a great article on just the subject and it makes good reading! Drink up!!
http://www.optimumnutrition4sport.com/?page_id=425

Take it easy now and again!

There is a lot of high-intensity bias in fitness journalism. Many people will advocate the faster sessions like hill repetitions, speed intervals and time trials. These workouts are seen as being more interesting than slower, steadier sessions such as recovery and aerobic base workouts. The last thing people in my position want to do is bore our readers, so more often than not we overlook the vanilla low-intensity workouts and write about the sexy high-intensity ones.
In the aggregate this bias gives athletes the impression that high-intensity workouts are more important. This is unfortunate, because the opposite is true. Low- to moderate-intensity swimming, cycling and running are the foundation of the most effective triathlon training programs. The world’s best triathletes spend most of their training time working at very comfortable effort levels.
Many of the world's best athletes use the steady base run, ride or swim as the cornerstone to their training routine. Also the high intensity interval sessions require a certain amount of base level that you can only attain though steady state exercise. Moreover the high intensity sessions will take a lot out of your body and put a large stress on your recovery system meaning that they cannot be performed frequently.
I have learnt the hard way not to neglect my base sessions- so yes while the speed sessions are necessary- don't forget to plod along every now and again!

Joys of joining a club and the cafe run!

Cycling can be a very lonely sport! Battling away against the wind and rain on your own for upwards of 4 hours- all in the name of enjoyment!

Group at the club ride cafe stop
It can of course however, be a great way to socialise and make new friends. Joining a club and getting out for the weekend runs and competing in evening time trials has been one of the best decisions I have made!

It has provided a great boost to my fitness- riding with those stronger that you is the quickest way to develop and committing to a group of friends is a sure fire way to combat any motivation problems!
Not only this it can be a great environment to learn more about what equipment to get, training methods, injury advice and also a great way to find out about racing and time-trialling.
Oh and the major upside- cafe stops are a great way to try some of your local area's best cake! Careful mind- or you will have to keep cycling a lot longer to burn off all those calories!!
So get out there- find a club and get riding (and eating!!)

Bank Holiday- sunny recovery ramblings!

Get that recovery in!!
Beautiful sunshine on a bank holiday morning at Lead-Out HQ should usually mean lots of miles getting logged up and even a few KOMs coming our way on the cycling revolution that is Strava.
However I was away racing over the weekend and racked up 160 hard miles over Saturday and Sunday meaning that I am pretty much forced to rest up today.

Despite the miles over the weekend I always feel like I am missing out if I am not on my bike when the sun is shining but sometimes you just have to suck it up and plant your bum on the sofa or in front of the computer for the afternoon.

Its made all the more difficult seeing the tweets, Facebook status' and strava rides being posted up -many recorded with our awesome iPhone 5 bike mount!! ; )

Ah well, recovery is an often over-looked part of training and not given the respect that it deserves. Having said that I am certainly looking forward to getting back out on the bike tomorrow morning before moving onto sourcing some great new products for Lead-Out. Knowing sod's law it will be grey, dull and blowing a gale!!

Safe riding

BCAA's- a supplement worth looking into

An often over-looked area of cycling performance by keen amateurs is their diet. While many cyclists focus on getting enough carbohydrates and protein in their diet, some do not look further and do not know the benefits that supplements can bring. While it can be something of a minefield and a lot of conflicting views, one supplement that has been getting very positive feedback of late is Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's). Here is a link to a very good article outlining the benefits associated with the supplement- well worth getting on board with this- they are a little difficult to get a hold of, but have found them in some health food shops, failing that you can find them online at places like MyProtein.

You never know it may even held you nab some more strava KOMs with your QuadLock mount- well worth investigating!!
