Gear Review

Introducing Gear Review

Check out the new page to our blog, bringing you opinion and info on some of the hottest gear.
First up to get the VAM look are the Bont Vaypors!

Overview and Spec: Bont Vaypor

At £225 the Bont Vaypor are certainly at the premium end of the market! The near top of the line shoes from claim to be super stiff, super light (225g) and claim to offer optimal power transfer from leg to pedal as a result of a very low stack height. The innovation doesn't stop there, with a heat mouldable upper area to the shoe, the Bont's can claim to be at the leading edge of the market.

Based on the successful ctt-one, the Bont Vaypor Road shoe continues Bont’s development in shoe technology. Whilst maintaining the lateral forefoot support synonymous with all Bont cycling shoe models, the Vaypor now has a reduced carbon height around the toe box area and an all new Suede L liner. The base is made by hand by sandwiching cross weave carbon and uni-directional carbon fibre which is embedded with epoxy thermo setting resin. The fibres are hand laid in the matrix according to the strain they will have to bear. Super Mould Technology allows you to obtain a custom fit from a stock boot.

No. 22 Bicycle Company was born out of a desire to strike equilibrium between enjoyment and performance. We build bicycles for the enthusiast who rides for riding's sake, and appreciates perfectly tuned ride quality as much as stiffness and low weight.
No. 22 Bicycle Company was born out of a desire to strike equilibrium between enjoyment and performance. We build bicycles for the enthusiast who rides for riding's sake, and appreciates perfectly tuned ride quality as much as stiffness and low weight.
Our point of departure was frame material—we quickly landed on titanium and named our company after it. We paired this material with geometries complementary to its characteristics resulting in
hand-built, clean-lined and contemporary interpretations of classic configurations. No back-breaking aggressive ergonomics, no gimmicky  construction  techniques.  We’ve  chosen  instead  to   finesse what has been time and ride proven to result in bikes that make the destination second to the journey.
No. 22 Bicycle Company was founded in Toronto, Canada in the spring of 2012.
The Bike- The Great Divide

page2image3984
Running through the Rocky Mountains in both Canada and the United States, the Great Divide is home to some of the most challenging and beautiful roads of North America. Our new namesake frame shares this cross-border connection having been designed in Canada and hand-built in the USA to tackle any length and pitch of road.
The Great Divide has been designed to showcase the best
characteristics of titanium while embracing the latest developments in frame design. Swaged chain stays and an oversized, bi-ovalized down tube are bridged by a PressFit 30 bottom bracket shell to provide stiffness and instant responsiveness under power. An oversized head tube accommodates the latest tapered forks while strengthening  the  bike’s  front  end  for  confidence-inspiring steering precision and cornering stability. Tempering these characteristics are a svelte seat tube and seat stays designed to keep the velvety ride quality that titanium is legendary for.
Taking the Great Divide from paper to the shop floor starts with the selection of the highest quality 3Al-2.5V aerospace grade titanium tubing, sourced from American mills. All applicable tubing is then double- or triple-butted by hand, varying wall thickness for each main tube in each size of frame. The tubing is then precisely shaped, mitered and welded by some of the most experienced titanium craftsmen in the industry.
The anodized graphics adorning the Great Divide frame deserve special mention. Using a process unique to titanium, our graphics are  formed  by  electrically  changing  the  structure  of  the  titanium’s   surface layer. Using no paints or dyes, the result is a supremely durable and corrosion resistant finish that beautifully contrasts the raw luster of bead-blasted titanium.
What makes titanium the ideal material for the Great Divide? A well-designed titanium frame strikes the perfect balance of low weight, smooth ride quality, and remarkable durability. 3Al-2.5V titanium offers a strength-to-weight ratio far better than aluminum or steel, which allows us to achieve more frame stiffness with less material. What makes titanium the stuff of framebuilding legend, however,  is  the  material’s  ability  to  soak  up  bumps  and  chatter  in   the road. A great titanium frame keeps you feeling fresh in the saddle even after long hours, but with none of the overdamped, wooden ride quality of comfort-oriented carbon frames.
The Great Divide is sold as a frameset paired with parts from the most respected American brands in the industry. A Chris King Inset 8 headset, full carbon fibre fork with a tapered steerer tube and a Thomson seat post collar set the tone for your build.
As with all No. 22 Bicycle Company frames, the Great Divide has been
built to last a lifetime of epic rides, and its craftsmanship is backed by our lifetime warranty.

Nutrition Focus

Is your diet broken? How can you fix it?

There is a great article about all of this from the guys at Precision Nutrtion, that helps to de-bunk some myths and also highlights how individual and specific each person's nutritional needs are to them.

In this article we’ll share the 3 main strategies we use to help clients fix a “broken diet” and start eating better.
We’ll also share how we troubleshoot eating plans when they’ve “just stopped working” and you don’t know what else to try.
And, finally, we’ll show you how to use these powerful and purposeful strategies to improve your own eating. Or to help others do the same.
++
Nutrition “advice” often comes in buzzwords and slogans. We’ve all heard at least one of these gems:
  • “Just eat whole foods.”
  • “Only eat food that your grandmother would recognize.”
  • “Eat more fat and fewer carbs.”
  • “If it doesn’t run, fly or swim – or it isn’t a green vegetable – don’t eat it.”
It’s easy to simplify healthy eating into a five-second pitch. But soundbytes aren’t enough to actually help people fix their eating and get better results.
You see, when you’re an actual nutrition coach who works with real humans in the real world, slogans don’t get the job done. Continue reading.....

Can you feel the power!?

Great article hear from the guys at Peaks Coaching Group on training with a power meter.

PEAKS COACHING GROUP: AN INTRODUCTION TO TRAINING WITH A POWERMETER

A power meter, as we all know, is a measuring tool. It measures the torsion (twisting) of a bicycle part that has been twisted as a result of your pedaling. This can be measured in the “spider” (the part between the chain rings and the crank), in the hub, on the twisting of the chain itself, or in the crank arms or pedals.
Power is torsion multiplied by angular velocity (angular velocity in cycling is how fast you pedal). Power is output in watts. The typical trained cyclist can average 250 watts for one hour, but what that number means in the real world is dependent on rider weight. For example, two cyclists producing 250 watts for an hour can have drastically different power to weight ratios:
  • A 115lb (52kg) cyclist will have a power-to-weight ratio of 4.8 watts per kilogram
  • A 180lb (81kg) cyclist will have a power-to-weight ratio of 3.0 watts per kilogram
Wattage is the measure of work that you can do on a bicycle. While heart rate can measure intensity of effort, it is dependent on rest, hydration of the rider, outside heat, and humidity. Heart rate is a response mechanism to work. Wattage is the “dose,” and heart rate is the “response.” If you’ve been training with a heart rate monitor, you’re basing your training on a response. But what causes that response? Why did your heart rate go to 150? Was it because a dog just chased you? Was it because you just did a hill sprint? Was it because you’re just hyped up as you sit on the start line waiting for the race to begin? Heart rate gives us some information, but it doesn’t tell you how much work you’re doing. A power meter does.
Once you’ve forked out the dough for your new power meter and gone through the laborious process of installing it on your bike, calibrating it, charging the computer, and figuring out how to use the buttons, you might ask yourself, “How do I use this thing to improve my cycling?” That’s a great question, because improving is exactly what you want to do with your new training tool.

Introducing the ILE Photography range..

Photo Bags

The Ultimate Photographers Bag.

This bag was designed by people who not only love to ride bikes, but also love photography. Its functionality makes it that much easier for any photographer to get from studio to photo shoot. Wether that is a ride across town, or hiking through airport terminals. Two different models feature different capacities. The more versitile model of The Ultimate Photographers Bag does more with less — just like your favorite prime lens. It is ideal as a carry-on, great for taking your photo equipment on a hike, or great for taking your gear to a shoot.

The MKIII model carries all the gear you need for a mobile shoot. It features a 12″x12″x8″ deep photo compartment–Reinforced with ABS plastic panels to keep your gear safe. The dividers can be arranged in a wide variety of ways to accommodate multiple DSLR bodies(with grip attached), lenses, flashes, batteries, chargers….or remove a row of dividers to fit smaller DV cameras. Due to the larger allotment of space for the photo gear, the upper compartment is smaller and compartmentalized for the traveling photographer. To add flexibility of carrying capacity, and customization of the bag, Natick Labs MOLLE system is used on the exterior. It can now be modified by the photographer for special requirements. Pouches and pockets can be added anywhere on the bag, thus making it ultimately customizable.
